What is Assisted Living?
Assisted living is a lifestyle that benefits
those individuals who wish to remain independent yet need some assistance
with activities of daily living (ADL) such as a reminder to take
medication or a helping hand with a zipper or button. The need may
be occasional or support may be required on a daily basis. Assisted
living care promotes maximum independence and choice by addressing
the individual needs and preferences of each resident while encouraging
the involvement of resident’s family and friends.
Who benefits from Assisted Living?
Someone who may require some assistance with
activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing, or grooming.
Someone who may require some assistance in remembering to take his
or her medication.
Someone who would benefit from daily companionship and socialization.
Someone who is unable to manage alone yet feels strongly about remaining
independent.
Someone who would feel secure knowing that 24-hour staff support
is available.
Who owns Longwood Place At Reading?
Reading Management, LLC operates and manages
Longwood Place. Reading Management, LLC is owned and operated by
the General Partners of Reading Senior Living Associates Limited
Partnership, the owner of Longwood Place.
Is there an age limit?
We do consider this community to be for seniors and expect that
our residents will be 62 years or older. The average age in assisted
living communities is about 85 years old.
Do you have Cable TV?
Yes, the building is cable ready. Comcast
is our cable access provider and can be reached at 1-888-633-4266
for service.
Are there individual heating and air conditioning controls in each
apartment?
Yes, each apartment is equipped with individual
controls.
What type of heating do you have?
We have vertical fan coil units using forced
hot water by gas.
What happens if Longwood Place At Reading loses electrical power?
In 2003, Longwood Place At Reading installed
an emergency generator to
provide temporary power to keep our residents safe and warm.
Do you require a lease to be signed?
Yes, we have a Residence and Service Agreement.
Residents can cancel the Agreement by giving a written 30-day cancellation
notice.
Is there a place to park my car?
Yes, there is adequate parking close to the
building, at no extra charge.
Is smoking permitted?
Smoking is permitted outside the building
in specified smoking locations.
Can we have pets?
Birds, fish and cats are permitted. Sorry,
dogs are not allowed because of barking that may disturb other residents.
Are young children allowed to visit?
This is your home, family and friends are
always welcome visitors.
Do you allow wheelchairs?
Some of the apartments are wheelchair accessible
and the building was designed to meet the accessibility requirement
for those requiring wheel chairs.
Do you have a beauty salon and barbershop?
Yes, there is a licensed Hairstylist who
schedules individual appointments.
How do I buy personal items such as toothpaste, bathroom tissue,
laundry detergent and hand soap?
We have a general store located next to the
beauty salon, operated by our volunteers and residents stocked with
products such as personal care items and seasonal items. Our transportation
van also goes on regularly scheduled shopping trips.
Are there kitchens in each apartment so that the residents can
cook if they choose?
Each apartment has a kitchenette equipped
with a microwave, a cook top and a refrigerator-freezer. However,
three delicious meals a day are included in the monthly fee, and
we do encourage all residents to dine in the dining room to enjoy
the companionship and fine food which residency at Longwood affords.
How many square feet are in each apartment?
We have many sizes and floor plans from which
to choose. They range in size from 314 square feet to 782 square
feet. Monthly fees are based on square footage and location. We
offer studios, one bedroom, and two bedroom apartments.
Are the apartments furnished?
No, we encourage residents to bring their
own furnishings to help make each apartment their home. We do have
furnished apartments for respite or short term stays.
Do you have a guest room?
Yes, however availability may be limited depending on how fully occupied our building is.
Are window covering and shower curtains included?
We provide shades and residents bring their
own curtains, shower liners, draperies and rods.
What kind of security do you have?
Residents will be provided with a Protect
Emergency Call Pendant when they enter Longwood Place. Also, we
have a staff on duty 24 hours a day and security cameras located
throughout the property.
When I am out late how will I get in?
There will be a staff member on 24 hours
a day to let residents in the front door. We do ask that the residents
inform us if they expect to be late, for security reasons.
How are the meals served?
Meals are served in our dining room by our
professional, friendly wait staff. Choices of a variety of entrees
are available at each meal. We also provide a list of alternatives.
Do you cater to special diets?
There will be a consultant dietitian available
to assist our chef with special diets ordered by a physician. We
will make every effort to prepare meals that adhere to resident’s
dietary restrictions. We do, however, expect our residents to monitor
their own diets.
Is their assigned seating in the dining room?
Yes. Residents should feel free to ask the
dining room manager for assistance.
Are my guests permitted to eat with me in the dining room, and
if so, what is the cost?
Yes, your guests are welcome to dine with
you. We ask that residents call the front desk at least 24 hours
in advance to make a reservation for guest meals. There is a charge
for each guest meal or special holiday meal.
If I am ill, will my meals be brought to my apartment? Is there
an extra charge?
If you are ill we will be happy to deliver
your meals to your apartment free of charge.
If I am away for a period of time, will I get a food credit?
Yes, if you are away for a period exceeding
fourteen days you will receive a credit on your monthly bill for
the cost of the food. Please note this is different than the cost
of guest meals.
Do you provide medical services?
We recommend that residents rely on their
own personal physicians for any medical needs. We do have a Resident
Services Coordinator who will act as a liaison with the medical
community and advocate for our residents for the medical services
they require.
How many minutes of personal care do I get and what does that include?
Up to 45 minutes a day of personal care is
provided and included in the monthly fee, and, if desired, additional
personal care can be provided for an additional charge.
Are there personnel on duty over night?
We have personal care attendants on duty
overnight 24 hours a day.
What happens if I am ill?
Our staff is on duty 24 hours a day. If you
require additional services, we will be happy to assist you through
our own staff or a local home health agency.
Do you have laundry services?
There are laundry rooms on all three floors
for the convenience of the residents. No coins are needed. If you
wish, we will wash, dry and fold your personal laundry for charge
per load. Flat linen service of your sheets and pillowcases is already
included in the monthly fee. Dry cleaning pick up and delivery is
available as well.
What about housekeeping services?
Included as a standard service, at no additional
cost, is weekly vacuuming, dusting and cleaning of the bathroom
and kitchen, plus a change of the bed linens and towels.
Do you furnish transportation?
Scheduled transportation is provided for
shopping and medical appointments. There are also special events
for which transportation will be arranged. Our receptionist will
be happy to assist any resident in getting a cab.
Is there public transportation?
There are local taxi services, which our
receptionist will help you with. Public buses and train service
are also available in Reading Center.
Are there recreation and exercise rooms?
Activities will be held both within and outside
our building. We will plan exercise programs to suit the needs of
our residents. There will also be a variety of activities to appeal
to many different tastes and interests. Residents will be questioned
concerning their special interests at move-in.
Do you have an additional activities program for those who may
require special attention?
Yes, we have our Enhanced Activities Program
5 days a week for those who require special attention. We do charge
a modest fee for this additional service.
Do you go on tours or trips?
We plan day trips in accordance with the
resident’s wishes.
Do you have an entrance or membership fee?
Longwood Place has a one time Community Fee
of $2,500 (optional for affordable apartments that are not supported
by Group Adult Foster Care). If the Residence and Service Agreement
is signed within 21 days of deposit, then the fee is reduced to
$2,000. The Community Fee is intended to cover staff administrative
costs, the resident’s initial Individual Service Plan, and
move-in assistance.
Who pays for utilities?
All utilities, except for telephone and cable
service, are included in the monthly fee.
Do you provide bathroom tissue and tissue paper?
It is only provided in the community restrooms,
but can be purchased in the general store, or during trips to stores
and markets by the Longwood Place vehicle.
Do you provide any apartments on an affordable basis?
Longwood Place provides 18 affordable assisted
living units. Residents who qualify for an affordable assisted living
apartment pay at a substantially reduced rate from market levels.
The affordable apartment rent is based upon state and federal guidelines,
and assisted living services are optional. Longwood Place offers
services at a reduced rate, or residents may coordinate and arrange
for alternate services, as necessary.
